Aside form what all the others answered which is all pretty much correct you have to be able to pass the ASVAB, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery and the score required varies from service to service, but with any of the services the higher your score is the better chance of getting a job you want. A 16 year old wanna be drop out that thinks the Marines are in Texas guarding the border really needs to finish high school.

If your friend is going ot drop out of high school, then your right, he is pretty stupid.
The military does not require a diploma, but it does require a GED.
Also, he would have to have a waiver from his parents to join under 18.
The National Guard was on the borders, not the Marines or Army.

In WWII, things like that sometimes happened. I never heard of 14 though. Audie Murphy joined at 16, but they didnt have computer records back then.

Me & you are the same people , I come from a military fmaily also . From what my brother told me Army is good but they choose your job for you ( thats what Ive been told I do not know for sure ) but the carees that your looking for are overmanned and the the con is that you have to serve , Marine is the same way but they are much stricter Ik sence my cousin is in the Marines & they have the highest overmanned jobs & you have to serve also ( con) but you can get a Collage degree & collage education that is payed for ( pro ) , Navy you can choose your own job , they pay for your intuition & books & all of that & also you work for them so you get a check ( if you wanna get your Collage degree ) , they dont force you to go to serve , its volountary , pros is that you get to choose your job & you can switch at any time you want , while getting a Collage degree , get payed very well , con is that depending on the job you choose you might need to live on the ship . Hope this help & maybe Ill see you out there sence Im joining the Navy :)

You can join the army at 17, but they won't let you go into boot camp without graduating first.

That's high school diploma not graduation. From the looks of it you should stay in school and get your diploma before you even try. Yes they do require a diploma these days.
