...well before that common hominid/hominin ancestor, and I mean waaaay back about 350 million years ago, we had a common ancestor to frogs and before that, 500 million years ago, we had a common ancestor to fish.
I mean, come on. Why are there still frogs and fish?
And Coelocanths. What's up with that family member?

That my question has prompted others to look up coelecanths may be enough. Being either lost, and found, or unchanged for the 60 odd million years isn't what is remarkable. What is unique is that a bridging, living, fossil, is observed, something that one "might" think extinct actually lives and swims/walks in support of "linking" fish from amphibians. Evidence of evolution which some would "poo-poo" because it is not hominid based.
When the doubting dolts receive the bullet right between the eyes and claim "prove Lead exists somewhere between Thallium and Bismuth" is when I shall dance and rejoice.

This is why I loved the book "The Dragons of Eden" by Carl Sagan so much. It tells about the evolution of the human brain and shows what part of your brain came from what stage of evolution. You can actually see them and it brings home the fact that we evolved from different families of animals over time.

The Coelocanths is considered a marker in the fossil layers. It's place is at about 60 million years (I think) but the funny thing is that these 'pre-historic' fish are alive and well today and that just throws a big ol' monkey wrench (pun intended =)) into their theories.
Oh and in answer to your question of whet will say when??? the same thing we've been saying all along...you got your facts mixed up!

I read a book from the 1890's that says Coelocanths have been extinct for 60+ million years, so there aren't still coelocanths. How do you explain that?
(Actually, I didn't read it. My Em Adjineri friend told me.)

Yes we did have all those common ancestors, as for WHY...because not ALL of them evolved or had that mutation...just like...why are there still white or black people? Or Asian? Or Hispanic? And Coelocanths, they survived for a coupld million years, it's weird, but I can say this...GO THEM!!!! I don't think that they fit into any sort of evolution discussion though...

In the beginning, we were all frogs. FROGS are all the existed. One day, the frogs all decided their lives were meaningless, (these frogs were signifigantly smarter than common day humans), so they all went to the burning acid pits. Upon throwing themselves into the acid pits, they did not die. They wanted to die, but they did not. They instead mutated into what we would now consider 'monkeys'. These monkeys were signifigantly dumber than before, flinging poop at each other.
These monkeys were common to live lives of 9 thousand years or more. Well after three generations of these 'monkeys', they devided. One group of monkeys led by LOTHANOX, the other led by ETHPION, (there were only capital letters at this time. ) the monkey leaders devided the monkey clans, and set war on each other. The top witch doctors of the ETHPION tribe, captured the LOTHANOX tribe. Every single LOTHANOXIAN was captured, and the witch doctors performed their black magic on them, turning them into ...HUMANS!...This is why we still have humans, and we still have Monkeys. EVERY Xian can understand this, it's all very clear. I just explained Evolution, and I dare you to prove the Biblical version is any more plausible

No kidding. They don't call or write for millions of years, and then one day they just stop by, unannounced?
You know they just want to mooch off us.
