You have two programs on your computer to help with that. Click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk clean up and disk degrag. (Do not run them at the same time and do not use the computer while they are scanning)
Also you should run a scan with your spyware program and then your virus program. As infections can slow a computer down.

You can run a deframent from your start menu. What happens is all the things you do get saved in little pieces all over the place and if you defrag it puts them all back together and frees up space for you.
Try that first.

lavasoft's Adaware se personal is free, and works very well.
Also: I think Spybot: Search and Destroy is free...
I use a combination of the two.
