Assuming its legal to use a rifle where you're planning on hunting, I'd suggest taking a look at the Marlin 336 (1), Winchester 94 (if you can find a used one someone's willing to sell) (2), and Mossberg 464. All three are available in .30/30. Of those, the Marlin 336 is probably the best option if you want a new gun in .30/30. I think Walmart (the bargin hunter's first stop) even still carries the Marlin 336. Last time I checked there aren't a whole lot of lever-guns available in .30/06. I think the Winchester 1895 and Browning BLR are available in .30/06, but don't hold me to it. Either rifle would work for deer, though I'm thinking the Browning BLR will be easier to find. Either way you'll probably spend more than $500 for one of these two guns.

IMO the Marlin Model 336 is a better gun than the Winchester Model 94 and if you plan to scope your rifle there is no comparison. The Marlin wins hands down, with it's side eject.

If you have a Dick's Sporting Goods in your area they have some really nice sales. They had the 336W with a factory mounted scope for $320 last week - the 336A was $350 - Wal-Mart also carries the Marlin 336 for a good price

They are a little bit more expensive but I prefer the 336C.

Dick's always has several sales before hunting season, so it's not like you missed out.

With Winchester bailing out (at the wrong time), of the lever action field, Marlin pretty much has it to themselves. And with the Hornady LeverEvolution ammunition that has become available, Marlin will sell a LOT of lever actions. The brand new Marlin 308 cartridge (the newest LeverEvolution cartridge) is going to be popular. It's performance approaches that of the 30.06, but in a much quicker, faster handling lever action. That is the one I would look at, if I was in the market for a new rifle.

I have always liked the Marlin 336 in 30-30. If you look around you should be able to get a scoped one used for about $200-250 or new for $250-325.
I liek Marlin because they are pretty well designed guns and are affordable.

Personally I prefer the Browning Leverguns. They can be bought in almost any caliber from 22-250 all the way to the new .325 WSM. They shoot well and handle well also, but they are more expensive than a Marlin, But there a Browning so there worth it.

I've got to go with Marlin. The classic is the Winchester but it seems like everyone who has a used one wants an arm and a leg for them. Marlin is a great gun, you won't go wrong with it.
