Short answer, don't bother.

Slightly longer answer, the tape over the inside and outside lens will cover the video, but you also need to cover the microphone, which is trickier than it sounds.

Even longer answer, depending upon where it draws its 12V from (which used to be behind the OBD-2 port), you could disconnect it from power. Of course, they're going to know that, and if your parents actually care, which is indicated by the fact that they have your *** in the program, you will lose your car.

Even longer answer, get a USB cable and a laptop-- and this only works if your model of DriveCam has a USB port-- and then find a copy of the software that can talk to the camera's innards (usbtest.exe, I think it used to be called). Make sure to spend hours and hours and hours trying to find it (you won't)-- once you do, you can actually go in and delete any event files off of the Compact Flash inside (or whatever solid state memory they use now).

Instead, you can totally cheat how the DriveCam works. Here's how:

1) Since the DriveCam has an accelerometer in it, it is vulnerable to gentle movements. It doesn't record anything at all unless you trip the accelerometer.

2) When accelerating from a red light, instead of stomping on the accelerator, which they're totally expecting, step on it gently and gradually until you reach a good cruising speed-- the DriveCam totally won't know what hit it (it thinks it's standing still)

3) When entering into traffic, you can cheat off the other guy-- if you watch what other people are doing ahead of you, you can completely avoid surprises altogether-- if you avoid situations where you have to slam on the breaks, you totally won't set off the DriveCam and you'll rob it of its precious video.

4) Don't run into stuff. This really should be number one. Bumping into anything (curbs, posts, other cars, cattle, etc.) will set off the DriveCam.

OH and really important to know is that YOUR PARENTS CAN NOT SEE YOU ALL THE TIME WITH THE DRIVECAM. The only time they EVER get to look at any video of you in your car is when you set it off-- then they have a 20-second look at whatever you're up to in the car.
Some good advice: if you're riding with your stupid friends and they wanna do crap in your car that they wouldn't do in theirs, you have a good reason to tell them not to. I can't tell you how many kids I've seen get busted because they were doing something dumb in someone else's car when the DriveCam went off.

The best revenge is simply not to drive like a dick, then your parents won't have any video to watch, they'll think it's a total waste, and then in like three years, when you're statistically not dead, they'll get rid of the thing.. and you're laughin' all the way to the bank.

That"s not true dumbass! We have installed over 10,00 Drivecams and specifically for WM. Drivecam and your employer get an alert that the unit has been disconnected or tampered with. Also when you make the payments on the vehicle and pay the huge insurance premiums you can have a say what goes into the truck and how your privacy counts. If you don t like it quit and start your own business and take all the risk. Until than shutup follow the rules and don t drive like an idiot!

Don t take advice from any of these people. Drivecam has spent a lot of money to out think stupid!

LOL, I don't have an answer for your question but I do think It's funny if you even have a drivecam in your car and your trying to disable it. Good Luck! Just be sure you can put it back together. LOL or you might get your car taken away from you if your parents find out

Cut the power to it. We have these at WM because our company doesn't trust us enough to do our job. Which is sad and an invasion of privacy on a small level. But certain employees have found that if you cut the power, the Drive Cam company has no clue it's not working. Only if someone visually goes to the vehicle to see the power is disconnected do they find the problem.

The Car Talk solution would be electrical tape. Put a piece over the camera. Good luck, and I'm glad my folks didn't think to do that to me.

ask your parents, maybe they would let you read the instruction manual. Of course, then they'd take away the car keys.
