should I rent a car for the few months or lease another car or buy a used car and hope it lasts the winter

You should either buy a second vehicle that is reliable and affordable (for your personal financial situation affordable varies) or lease something that is appropriate. I typically think of sports cars that are not functional year around as an additional vehicle anyway. I would assume that you can afford more than 1 vehicle. If you can't you might need to consider getting rid of the impractical car...

Is public transportation an option in your area? If it is that might solve the issue for the majority of the time that the weather is not cooperative.

Sports cars can be good snow cars. The biggest hinderance in snow is usually the performance tires that are on them...they are the worst tires for snow. A set of snow tires can make a huge difference in grip. You can keep 2 sets of tires and still run performance tires in the dry months. Many tire manufacturers make studless snow tires in performance sizes. There are also performance snow tires you can run all year.

If your car is rear-wheel drive, some extra weight in the trunk can help a lot. Sand tubes are common. If your car is front-wheel drive, don't add weight to the back.

Another problem can be that sports cars often have abundant power. On snow you want to try to keep the tires from spinning, so be very light with the right foot. Starting out in 2nd gear might also help the tires maintain grip.

Good luck

I'm not sure what the winters are like where you are. We get a lot of snow in northern New England, so I'll tell you what I would do.

I would find a cheap 4WD truck and throw some snow tires on it. Probably studded ones. Keep the tires it comes with, though, because it can come in handy any time of year.

Stay on top of the regular maintenance and be sure to wash it as weather permits. Salt will kill any vehicle long before it's time.

Buy a cheap used car. If you are only using it for a few months out of the year, it should last you for at least a couple of years. MUCH cheaper than the other two options.

Here in NH we call them "winter beaters"...a car in the $500-700 range and with luck they last a winter or 2. It never hurts to have a spare car anyway.

if its like a two seater sports car like the corvette then lease a car that can fit many people. you won't know when you are going to need the extra space in the car. and i would not suggest used car. they are not reliable.
