Do you want public transportation or driving yourself?
Metro North services New Haven, CT. You may have to transfer at Stamford, CT to get to NYC. This will get you to Grand Central Terminal.
Theres also Amtrak from New Haven, but I recommend Metro North.
If you must drive yourself (I just did the drive through that area last month, dont recommend it, unless you like sitting in traffic), Id drive into Westchester County(Rye, Mamaroneck, even Yonkers), and pick up Metro North there to save money and a transfer. Driving in Manhattan is no fun, and parking can get really expensive.

Metro North New Haven line. Avoid the Local train..it will take forever to get there. Go for the Express.

The easiest is probably I-95, but on most days it is absolutely crowded and once you`ve reached Bridgeport the average speed can be less than 3o mph. I would recommend the train - not cheap, but also not nerve-wrecking!
