My Hubby and I have been invited to a barbeque at his boss's house on Labor Day. We live in a small community as does the boss & his family. Would it be rude to call the boss's wife and ask if I could bring anything or help in anyway? This is a casual gathering of workers and most of them are single guys so I don't know how much real help she has. She as young children as well.

It is ALWAYS acceptable to call the hostess of a gathering and ask if there's any way that you can help or if you can bring along a favorite dish to share. A little gift would be very appropriate as well, It needn't be anything extravegant. Produce from the garden of fresh picked flowers tend to make a wonderful impressionAnd are a genuine gift of your self.

I think that's a very thoughtful thing to do. And I think even if she says no I would bring a small hostess gift - maybe a small plant or a bouquet of flowers.

Not at all!!!!! It's a party, it's nice to ask if you can bring something and I tell you, it is much nicer and more polite to ask if you can than to just bring something and presume it will be served. Maybe she's catering Japanese food and doesn't want people to bring stuff, in which case she can decline and no problem. My guess is that she will welcome the offer!

I don't see why that would be rude. Or you could just bring along a dessert or something. Nobody is going to get mad at you for doing that.

I think yes, do it. Also maybe on the way over, give her a call to make sure she doesn't need any last minuet forgotten items. Sometimes that's a godsend.
