We have had Joie our short hair tabby for two months now with no problems. We got a med/long hair black cat two weeks ago and my daughter has been having issues. She was sent home from school with two really red eyes, we took her to the dr and she said it was allergy to the new cat, not pink eye.
BUt she didn't have any problems for two months with our short hair.

so I guess I am asking can a person be allergic to a long hair cat but not a short hair.

Cat allergies are caused by the dander, not the hair. Different cats have different types of dander, one of which may bother your daughter, while the other one doesn't. Over time, she may adjust to the new cat's dander as well from being exposed to it. In the meantime, just make sure she washes her hands after touching either cat, keep both cats brushed and clean, and keep your house well dusted and vacuumed. This should help cut down on her uncomfortable allergy symptoms. Good luck!

Yes they can be allergic to different cats. Each cat has individual dander, some people are more allergic to certain cats than others. For example- My Fiances little brother is usually VERY allergic to any cat he comes near, however, he does fine, not even a stuffy nose when he comes in contact with our Persian cat, but gets a little bit of a reaction if he holds our other long haired cat...

Yes. Allergies to long haired cats are more common than those to short haired cats.

When the cats bathe, their spit leaves a fine dust on their fur and anything else they shed on, including your daughter. This is part of pet dander, and this is what she's allergic to. There's more dander on your longhair than your short hair. With that theory in mind, I suppose it's possible. I outgrew my cat allergies (mine were just as bad), and I sincerely hope your daughter outgrows them too. Kitties are wonderful pets to have (as with all pets). ^_^

I think it could be possible. My ex husband was allergic to cats but for some weird reason he wasn't allergic to the calico ones. I know that's just a color patern but it was true the other cats bothered him like at my moms house.

Usually it's a matter of light versus dark. Dark furred cats produce more allergen than white cats do, so you'd be getting a stronger histamine response off the darker coat colors than the lighter coat colors.

im not an expert but i would think this is possible as the long hair cat will either molt more or molt same as your other cats but the hair are longer so you can sense them better causing a larger reaction

I think that people are allergic to cat hair dander, and maybe long-haired cats have more dander.
