I really like Acura Integras. They don't make them anymore but you can find 2000 and newer models. They're fun to drive, sporty, reliable, practical (the hatchback can fit a lot of stuff), good in the snow, easy on gas and just really great to own. It was replaced by the Acura RSX--you can check those out too but they're probably still out of your price range--they haven't been out very long. I prefer the Integra myself though.

You might also like a Toyota Celica...they're also great cars. I used to have an Integra and my sister used to have a Celica. They sure were fun.

How about a Pontiac Sunfire or Chevy Cavalier?
Both or kinda sporty and great on gas. You can find them at that year for that price. They are a good reliable car if you remember to check the oil. I love my sunfire. I have a 2004 and it has never failed me. Fun to drive too.

Saturn SC1 or SC2 is a sporty looking little car that fits your budget. They get great gas mileage and very dependable.
