We, as Christians, have been freed from the old laws of the Jews. We can do whatever we want to do, but we must be careful because in our newfound freedom we may go astray and do things we ought not do.
This is our ticket to a new and better life, free from the heavy burden of the law.
But it comes with responsibility. We each are personally responsible for our own behavior, and our own salvation. We have nobody to blame but ourselves if we fail to meet the qualifications for heaven.

Paul was probably quoting some common sayings from Corinth that were used to excuse immoral behavior, but the Corinthians had perverted the sayings. So Paul is effect denying the very point of the sayings.
