People that have been associated with military understand. Coffee table liberals have no clue. They just sit around the coffee table and drink Chablis and talk about what animals the military is full of. They turn on Oprah or Rosie or some other dimwitted hollywood liberal and think they are receiving information directly from the Supreme Being.
Conservatives understand that you can't deal with crazy and sometimes you must use force as long as "Rules of Engagement" are followed. Then there are Americans that have closer experience with Military life and they back the military 100%. of course that doesn't include merchants in mililtary towns that rip off service people.
I sometimes think reservists don't understand the military, just that check they want every month for a hard weekends work.

True. The military only comprises about 2/3rds of 1% of the US population. Overall, only about 3% of the younger generations serve at all.

On top of that, a large portion of the military is 2nd or 3rd generation, so that means of the less then 1%, its the same families serving over and over.

A lot of Americans no longer even undstand even basic military facts, like the concept that some people are officers and some are enlisted. I dont know how many times I get asked what is an officer when I tell people my rank. I can understand that some people may not know ranks, but from the movies they should atleast understand some people get saluted, and some don't, but even that is lost on a lot of people.

True. Because the government keeps it that way, for good or ill. The only thing I know of the military is what I've heard from friends that were in, or their families.

People complain all the time that Americans don't understand the importance of the military, yadda yadda yadda. Definitely true, but whose fault is that? There's enough blame to go around, but blaming "crazy liberals" when you're accusing them of not understanding an organization that does not (and sometimes cannot) make their goals, methods, and attitudes transparent to the public is insane.

It's not the fault of the average American that s/he can't understand. It's not even a bad thing, if I hear the servicemen/women correctly---there are many things we CAN'T know---so how can you blame people for being confused and a bit angry?

True, to a point. Those Americans who have no affiliation with the military (via family, friends, or other loved ones) are usually the ones who have no idea about how the military works, what it's like to be involved, what the soldiers and their families are sacrificing, etc. These are usually the ones who are protesting at or verbally abusing the soldiers rather than the government.

Of course the people who join the military in peace time for the benefits (education, housing, travel, etc.) and then protest having to go to war when needed are a whole other issue....

I got all the way down to 'Just Plain Jim' to find an answer that seems the closest to an answer that might satisfie your question.
This 'military' of America today is unique in human history.. nothing comes close to it as far as the distructability, or the precise erradication, or the overall emensity of it's potential on a global scale.
Does ANY ONE understand a military force so beyond any thing and every thing else on earth even remotly termed a military..?..
Who knows...
Probably not...
Obviously even the 'thinkers' of our government are haveing a difficult time understanding it's affect, and it's effects on global populations .
Who on this planet asked for a global police force, >?< anyways???
... must have been those industrialists trying to keep there economies afloat, or something like that.

True. My kids have been in the military for 7 years and I ask alot of questions when I don't understand something. I learn something almost everyday.

Most people that are not affiliated with the military think it is just join and either get deployed or sit around and collect money and benefits.

True. I am trying, Toots. At least, I can admit that I am jealous of yall. I tried to join the army at 17, but got turned down. I always wanted to be a soldier. Sometimes, knowing I will never be, tears me apart.
God Bless the military, you, and America.

Happy Labor Day!

True. Most people I talk to think people in the military are always in uniform and getting yelled at and stuff like that. Its a common misconception. Being in the military is just like any other job, except when you are in the field or at war.

true and false, no civilians gets to see what its really like until they join, they only see whats on TV or here allot of what relatives go through, if they have any known relatives that were in the military, there are many fine points about the military that's never shown to the public eye or ever heard about.
