Im going to look at a 2001 Automactic VW Jetta tomorrow but im not sure if it's a good deal or overpriced. It has 57,000 miles on it, the person selling it is the second owner and comes fully loaded. This will be the first car I've ever purchased so i want to know what I should look for when I am inspecting it. Also, am I paying to much?? should I try and lower the price?? to how much? Is this model know for having certain problems with it? how much would maintaince cost for the car? Also what kind of questions should I ask when i go look at it?

Check out the retail value at kelley blue book (can find it online by google), also go to a local mechanic and ask for advice, what you should look for. I think VW is a little pricey to repair but noone would know better than a mechanic! Good Luck!

I looked up the retail and a 2001 jetta stripped w/ those miles and auto goes for 8,775 in excellent cond. and 8,100 in good shape. Sounds like a fair price. Take the car to a local mechanic you can trust. Ask the owner for service records, reason for selling..etc. Buy a carfax to make sure it isnt a flood, rental, or has been in an accident. Go to carfax.com and buy a carfax, it is well worth the 20 or so bucks. If this deal doesn't work out try going to a vw dealer and get a certified pre ownerd which has a 4yr warranty. here is the kbb

Hope this helps

If you want the buttered up version.
the jetta is a very attractive car.
thats pretty low mileage
the price is fair.
good handling
if you want the truth
the 2001 jetta was rated the least reliable small car by jd power, consumer affairs, and consumer reports.
the car is very expensive to own.
it received a 2 out of 5 for overall dependability
it received a 2 out of 5 for power train reliability
it received a 2 out of 5 for body and interior reliability
it received a 2 out of 5 for features and accessory reliability

they started that model in 1999, so it falls under the DO NOT BUY list (cars are far less reliable in the first two years of production.. after the 3rd year, most of the bugs have been worked out)
the parts are very expensive for being an econo car:

i would say stay away from it.

An '01 auto Jetta with only 57K on it? nice.

Always try to talk them down. And like the first answerer said, check the KBB value and take it to a mechanic. Try to take it to a VW certified mechanic that isn't a dealership. Although, that may be hard to find. If you can't find one, try for an import specialist, like an Audi or BMW mechanic.

Good Luck!
