I keep hearing people call one another ignorant on this site just for having a certain set of beliefs. But would anyone whos truly open minded and intelligent call someone close minded, ignorant or stupid? It seems me that these judgments cannot be made without knowing the person. Someone might ask a dumb question or give a dumb answer but that does not make them ignorant or stupid necessarily. We all learn though our mistakes and some of the wisest among us have made the most mistakes. When I see someone esle call someone else out for being close minded and stupid, it makes me think about how close minded and stupid they are making themselves look.

And the sweeping generalizations people make about Christians and Atheists lately are driving me nuts. NONE of us TRULY know the answer to any of lifes toughest questions because none of us were present to witness the beginning of time. I like to hear other peoples thougts but do not the thoughtless hate of late.

I know that close-mindedness is not the same as ignorance which is not the same as stupidity. I wrote the words because they tend to be strung together
in one insult.

Oh to the other guy, I am not denying God, I know whats in the Bible, I am just saying there is ALOT left out of the Bibel which leaves room for explanation. AND I was not nor were you present during ANY of the events recorded in the Bible, nor do we know the language which it was orgionally written in. So to say that you know everything becasue you read the Bible does not satisfy my own desire for knowlege. If you do not desire to mix rational thought with your religion then you are most to be pittied. I refuse to blindly believe anything because someone with more authority than I told me to. There are lots of holes in Christianity and Atheism as well, I thinks its about time we all realize that.

An ignorant person doesn't know all the facts and a closed-minded person doesn't want to know all the facts. Just because you might be open-minded doesn't stop the other person from being close-minded or ignorant. But just because they have a different set of opinions or beliefs doesn't make them ignorant or closed-minded either.

I agree. If someone believes it, then it has to be believable, with what they have been raised to believe and what they have been through in life. Sometimes people think that all Christians are hypocrites that always think they are right. I hope that I never act hypocritical, and I know that I'm not perfect. In fact, I just did something really bad today. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that a truly open-minded person would have to sit down and really consider the facts before they called someone else ignorant or stupid. And while the Bible does reveal answers to tough issues, we still can't comprehend something because of our human nature, which should make us want to search even deeper into God's Word.

You can call someone close minded, but you can never call someone ignorant and hope it to mean anything since we as humans are removed from the divine state of perfection and can not rationalize or approach the immediacy of its knowledge. In that sense we are all ignorant. Just as every blind man is without sight, so every human is without omniscience, and that makes them ignorant. So although you can call someone else ignorant, it is merely the reflection of your own state of mind as well.

does it make a person intolerant to be intolerant to a person that is being intolerant? my answer is no, intolerance to intolerance does NOT make a person intolerant. call a spade a spade.

it is not necessarily hard to discern whether or not a person is closed minded or not. for the record, saying someone is ignorant is not the same as saying they are stupid, dumb, etc.
anyone who calls other people names like dumb/stupid is not being open minded, however, i do not think that it is closed minded to indicate that someone is ignorant of something if they have demonstrated a lack of knowledge or, more importantly, a lack of motivation to gain the knowledge necessary to cure their ignorance.

To say that none of us truly knows the answer to any of life's toughest problems is to agree to disagree.

I do not.

God has given us the knowledge of him and the bible and to deny that is to deny him.

No because that would make me examine my own life before I would call them ignorant or stupid. Don't judge before you are judged first.
