I leave soon for the army, and I'll be in the Army for 6 years. I was just wondering, in the case that I do get pregnant, will they force me to discharge early? I've already talked to my father about a plan about the "child" should I ever have to deploy. My brother David would watch the child while I'm over seas. So is being a single parent in the army a problem? I really love the idea of me serving my country...but I also umm have needs you needs, and I will never ever have an abortion. I just want to make sure that they won't make me leave the army.

Consult planned parenthood........... Needs don't make you pregnant... Lack of planning does..........

No you don't get "kicked out" or every woman soldier in Iraq would be getting pregnant..

Getting out of the Army if you become pregnant is an option, not a rule. If you want to get out, it is called a chapter 8 discharge, and it is an honorable discharge.

If you choose to stay in the military, you will have to come up with what is called a family care plan. The FCP sets up a line of custody for your baby in the event that you get deployed. It is a requirement. If you do not have one established, you have thirty days to get one. If you still do not have one by that point, or have no substantial proof that you're at least working on it, you will be discharged from the military. I don't know for sure, but this should be an honorable discharge as well.

Not sure about the Army, but if a woman in the AF gets pregnant, she is given the option to separate with an honorable discharge. I would think the other services are the same.

Being a single parent is tough no matter what you do for a living but I would say with increased deployments it would be especially tough to be in the military and be a single parent.

Yeah, I've been out for a few years, but when I was in, my Ex, who was also enlisted had 2 children, both times she was offerd a Medical dischage, the hitch with that is you dont have the option to re-enlist at a latter time. Both times she elected to continue serving, I beleive she had 1 month of maternity leave & then was back to work. Seh went on to do 10 years till she was forced out on a medical retirement do to a severe injury during training.
As far as the one of the comments, about women serving in Iraq would be pregnant, alot do get re-deployed out of theatre when they get pregnant, or at least they did during Desert Storm I'll have to admit I havent seen it that much this time, could be more of them are married & don't want an ugly divorce, or it could be that, Like most Soldiers I deal with on a daily basis, they Love Serving their country, & will accept the good with the bad, & shoulder their duty with Honor & Pride.

No they won't kick you out but if you are thinking about getting pregnant, the army isnt exactly a place for single mothers. I live on a base, if you do not have a family action plan, you can get chaptered out. A fam action plan is usually giving up custody of your child so you can go to overseas non-accompanied tours.

No, they wont force you to discharge early. You could get an honorable discharge and leave before your term with the military is over, or could stay and have the baby. They have all sorts of family programs, day care and stuff at most of the bases. These military bases are like little towns of their own...You'll be fine

here's a radical thought:
BIRTH CONTROL.

and yes, they WILL make you leave the Army if you cannot come up with a rock solid Family Care plan that covers who will take care of the child 24/7 at any hour of the day or night at any location.

Don't be the base whore. It's a bad rep and you will be looked down upon by your fellow soldiers.

They wont kick you out, i knew allot of female seamen that got pregnant and stayed in, same with allot of my fellow marines, however of course for as long as your pregnant and a few months after you had the child, you cannot be deployed anywhere.

well first off if you get pregnant it wont necessarily mean your going to be a single mom. Why not meet someone get serious get married or atleast be serious about someone so it has a chance to last. They wont kick you out of the army they will just need to see in writing your family care plan which sounds like you have it planned out.

I agree, talk to your doc and make sure you're taking every precaution you can to ensure you're not getting pregnant AND not getting diseases. It's hard enough being a single parent, being a single military parent is even harder.
