I'm thinking that religous people practice criticism on each other, at least as much as they critisize themselves. It's seems to be much like two barbers, one with a good haircut, and one with a bad haircut. Which barber would you want? (Remember, barbers cut each other's hair when they don't have customers) Perhaps the best minister, isn't the most attractive, or sociable minister.

If you don't want a haircut, why do you hang around the barbershop? Perhaps you remember when you had hair (faith)? Maybe you enjoy the company of well-groomed folks(works)? Maybe you just like the atmosphere (other people's prayers).

I don't like PC preachers, or overly groomed barbers...

A rabbi is a teacher -- nothing more, nothing less. What kind of a teacher wouldn't allow questions?

We are all equal in the eyes of God. A rabbi has no more power than any of the rest of us.

there is a movie from the 1970s which I'd love to see again but it is not on DVD or video which looks at this very topic. It is called "Mass Appeal" and stars Jack Lemon as a pastor of a very prosperous catholic church in a nice and neat little suburb. Lemon is the Johnny Carson of pastors - he's extremely personable with all (espescially the big donors) and gives entertaining homilies that always leaves them laughing.

Then, he gets a novice priest to mentor who is a very serious young man. He's had trouble in other assignments because he is too much of a downer. This youngster's homilies challenge the parishioners to examing their lives - look at all they have and compare that to the poor and starving.

Lemon is sure he can make the boy lighten up but he cannot. The novice makes all the parishioners feel uncomfortable about their transgressions, their extramarital affairs, their cheating on their taxes. This has a big affect on the collection plate and provokes a big confrontation between the master and the student over what the role of a Priest should be.

I hope you can find it. I saw this on TV about 20 years ago but have not been able to find it ever since.

It may be a cliche, but I think those overly critical of others are insecure about themselves.
I assume you are speaking of Xian ministers/priests....
I'm studying to be a Priest in the United Pagan Church of Australia. The ability to be a critical and judgmental b@stard is NOT part of the criteria.

99% of religious people, don't have a clue about reality,.. they look good in their robes and brainwash people with nonsense, like, "angels had sex with women." or " fear your father." or "only 144,000 is gettin' in." PC preachers and groomed barbers only look good on the outside and only have book knowledge on the inside. A real spokesman for God will say new things.

No, they are called by God to tell you the truth from the Bible, sometimes the truth hurts, sometimes the Preacher steps on my toes so hard I walk with a limp till I get to alter to ask Jesus to forgive me. We may not like tough sermons sometimes but it makes us better christians, are you a Christian, have you ever accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. He died on a cross for your sins. He rose from the grave on the third day forever washing away all your sins. All you have to do is repent and confess. Jesus Loves YOU, If you would like to be saved right now just say this simple Prayer believing in Jesus, Dear Lord, I confess to you that I am a sinner and that you died on a cross for me to take away my sins. I believe you rose from the grave, washing away my sins, I ask you now to come into my heart and save me. I believe you are the Son of God, in Jesus Name, Amen... If you Prayed this Prayer with a sincere heart believing on Jesus you are now saved and on your way to Heaven. Find a church, confess your transformation publically and start serving the Lord. Read your Bible daily, It will guide you into all truth, the Holy Spirit will come and live in your heart and teach you all things, May God richly Bless YOU!!

I take the point of a need to be self-effacing. I think the ministers or priests role has to hold it all together first and kick the backsides of dissenters second

Surly, a priest or a minister should be critical. After all it is his job roll to do so.

We're supposed to accept all, but let them know when you're doing something wrong...not to criticize, denounce, or condemn them for doing wrong.
