Or will the U.S. be there for the next century or more? After all the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds will never be at peace.

Is the U.S. destined to spend a long long time there?

Ya we are gona be there for a LONG time. Then the second they institute a draft everyone will be protesting against the war like people were protesting to get Michael Vick put in jail. Then we will finally pull out. Either that or the next president (whoever that is) will pull us out of Iraq. Either way Bush put us in unnecessary predicament that will hurt America forever (in some way).

It will probably take years for us to set up and get a stable government. How long we stay depends on who wins the next election and what happens between now and then. The troops we still have in Germany, Japan and Korea are not there because we need them to control the countries they are in but because of mainly external threats-Germany was NATO to control Russian expansion Japan and Korea to control North Korean and Chinese expansion. If a stable government is set up in Iraq they will still have threats from outside because most of the surrounding countries do not want a democracy in the area; sets a "bad" example that might give some hope to their population. We pull out before it is stable, as some people desire, then it will fall apart and both Syria and Iran will either take control of areas or use proxies to do so. To do it right we would need to be there for an extended period but not necessarily in combat or fighting; we would need to be a security screen against external forces again as we were in Europe and Asia during the post WW 2 era.

Yes, under one of two circumstances.

1) This mission is finished and stability is acheived.

2) The nay-sayers win out, keep a spine and force it. So far the Democrats in Congress have not had the backbone to push it through.

well shorty. a sick mind like yours deserves a visit from the secret service. A threat on the president wheather you like the person or not is jail time. then your nasty smart mouth full of disrespect will be able to spread your disease to all your bunk mates.. You dont like him, dont vote for him. what ever party.

America's interest in Iraq will end when the last barrel of oil is pumped out of the sand.

Eventually, but not until a democratic middle east is able to fend for itself without letting the global economy collapse around it due to religious reasons. So it may take a while...
