I can only hope that Christians are becoming less certain about what hell is IF they believe that they actually know what it is!

Far too many Christians have this vivid picture of a devil with horns on his head ruling over a pit of fire and brimstone where all who choose to enter will be tortured for eternity. Some even believe that the "loving God" the follow will actually throw people in that pit. The bible does NOT paint this picture, it is painted for them by other Christians or it is created in their own minds. Others believe that it is just eternal death (rotting in the grave if you will).

For me, I don't accept OR reject either possibility...the only thing any person can say is that they do NOT know what happens when we die...and a Christian should focus on God's promise that if we follow his instructions, we will be invited to spend eternity in his kingdom. Thanks, I'll take that one and leave the concept of hell and the decision about who gets to experience it in his capable hands.

I never thought hell was a pit of fire. I think the pit of fire is a medifore for how we will feel. We will know all the things we have done wrong, and won't be in the presence of God or our families. That would be hell to me!

No, Hell is a very hot place where the devil and his band of demons will be, I don't want to be there with them, The Bible says that Hell was made for the devil and his angels. Hell was not made for you and me. Jesus came and died on a cross for you and me and made away so we could be saved and not go there. I loved the movie the Passion of the Christ, that had to be close to the real type of Crucifixion. Jesus suffered tremendous pain for you and me, and then gave his own life as a sacrifice so that we might have eternal life in Heaven. But inorder to get there you have to be a believer, you have to be born again. You must accept by faith that Jesus Christ died for your sins and then rose from the grave the third day forever opening the doors of Heaven. You have to admit that you are a sinner too. The Bible says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. He is holy, we are not, Jesus was Perfect, we are not, thats why his blood was spilled at Calvery to cover our sins, the Bibles says that without the shedding of Blood their is no remission of sins, If you believe this and would like to be saved just say this sinners prayer and Christ will come into your life and save you, Dear Jesus, I just ask you right now to come into my life and save me, I admit and confess that I am a sinner. I believe that you came and died on a cross for my sins, and that you rose from the grave as a perfect sacrifice to cover the sins of all mankind. I do believe you are the Son of God and I ask you to make me one of your children in the Kingdom of Heaven, and be my Lord and Saviour, in Jesus Name Amen, If you Prayed this Prayer with a sincere heart you are now saved, You should feel a burden being lifted off your heart and the days will seem brighter as Christ begins a work in you, find a church, and start reading your Bible, may God Bless YOU!!! If you have any questions please feel free to email me. Mercy and Grace have been applied!!!

Is this question kind of like how in the Miss Teen USA pageant, Ms. South Carolina was asked why Americans are becoming less and less certain where to locate USA on a map?

Maybe it's just the South Carolinian Christians who can't answer.

I think everyone, whether Christian or not, has their own idea of what hell is. I have always been taught that its worse then the worst thing that you can imagine. Also, it is so horrible because God's presence is not there. I was never taught of a hell fire and brimstone place.

Yes, Hell in the popular concept is not Biblical. Bible talks about grave and death and our great christian leaders mistranslated it as HELL to threaten non believers. And blaspheme God, by proping up a concept that is against the precept that God is Love.

California Frown, Actually it is neither. Hell bound fools are on their way to tourment as soon as the heart quits beating ! But the lake of fire doesn"t come until judgement day.

I have been there, the Rock Cafe at Cirencester on a summers Saturday night, Intolerable heat, intolerable noise intolerable smell and legs and arms thrashing around in a drunken frenzy. Hell must be just like that.

Hell is an imaginary realm, dreamed up in the minds of Christian authors such as Milton. Nobody knows what Hell/Hel/Hades actually is, other than a state of remoteness from God.
