The remote and the button inside make the lock move a bit, but will not totally pop up. Both will make it lock rather easily tho. Also the key will not open that door lock either. I also can't figure out how to take of the paneling inside without breaking tabs. I see only two screws near the handle that don't appear to help me take it off.

Coomon problem on Ford's. Lock mechanism --or known as door latch-- in the door is probably worn out or caked with gunk or the electric lock actuator is bad and holding up the lock mechanism---either way, you have to remove the trim panel to access the lock or actuator to determine the cause. Parts stores sell service manuals like Chilton or Haynes that show how to remove the trim or Eaurorepair.net has online access for a small fee.
Therangerstation.com is a good site for Explorer/Bronco problems and info as well.
I would open up the door and unhook the lock actuator from the latch first to see if it's holding or binding the latch....if the door locks/unlocks ok manually, then replace the actuator. If not, could be the latch or cables. Some people say by just spraying rust penetrant or WD-40 into the lock mechanism works for a time also.

I had this problem on a couple of different explorers in the past. Here's the problem. There is a little spring inside the latch that breaks. That is also why your outside door handle feels really floppy(no spring tension on it). You can take the latch out of the door and try to repair or replace the spring. Or just replace the DOOR LATCH ASSEMBLY and be done with it.
A word of caution though: It WILL GET WORSE AND YOU MAY NOT EVEN OPEN THE DOOR at all. Then you'll have to get something to reach down inside the door and push down on one of the rods. Been there done that too.
