A few weeks ago they decided to put me through verification. After all the paper work they said it'd be 2 weeks. It has now been 2 weeks and they say it will be 30 days.

I have no $ to buy books and I have assignments due on tuesday. I know it doesn't take them 30 days to read 1 page of paper. Anyone work in financial aid and know of a short cut?

If your situation gets desperate, some schools have very low interest loans you can take out at the beginning of the semester till your financial aid comes in.

Or if that is not an option, search your school library or near-by libraries to see if they carry any of your books. Or make a friend in a class and ask if you can copy the first few chapters or so of the textbook.

just keep in mind that the school is not deliberately trying to slow down your aid. there are things they are bound by the government to do in verification situations. it might it takes them two weeks to file the paperwork, then thirty days waiting on the government to do their part.

1. go to their office, don't call them up. be civil and polite. it gets you a lot further than yelling. think of how many people come in screaming at them for something that is out of their control. they're more likely to work with you if you're civil about the matter.

2. get the name of the person you're talking to. politely ask them to explain why you were told two weeks and now it's an extra thirty days and that you need your refund.

3. financial aid offices are very busy this time of year. follow up on it every so often. try to stay in contact with the person you initially talked to. if they're not available or you have to talk to someone else that's giving you contradictory information, tell them that you talked to ______ on _______ and they said ________, what changed?

good luck!

Mary is correct, but a school CAN put you in verification IF they think things do not look right. I have done it many times when I was a director.

Be nice, always ask what else you need. Did you apply in time? Once you visit with your counselor, drop off a hand written note to say thank you. This just might make an impression and get your paperwork rushed through.
Good luck!

The school does not decide to put people through verifitcation. It is the a random selection from the Fafsa, so it is not their fault. A lot of people are finishing up their financial aid right now, so it is going to take some time to process.

I would go to the school and see if they have a book loan you could take out.
