because the people who do, have no real concept of history.

they take a few similarities and try to make a connection.

using their logic we are also like the Huns, the Carthaginians, the Goths, the Egyptians, the Maya, the Tokugawa shogunate, the Gauls, the Zulu and the Atlantians....

When people make comparisons of Bush to Hitler, Stalin or even Napoleon they exemplify people who have ZERO concept of fact or history.

But these arguments only work on people ignorant of facts or history, the people who's historical education ended as soon as they stepped out of high school history.

Rome was Rome, Gaul was Gaul, The US is the US and Iraq is not Vietnam... history is full of similarities but it never truly repeats it's self... It can't.

we can learn lessons from the past but we can never fully apply the cause and effect to today's events because it will never play out the same way.

My piece of advice, stay smarter than the ones who fall for that crap. you are better for it.

Did you know the bible has a prophecy that the 4th kingdom to control Israel would break into pieces and then reform in the end times. That empire was Rome. The first three were Babylon, Persia and Greece. Today the Roman Empire is being reformed by the U.N. and E.U. The U.S. is not the Roman Empire. The fact that we aren't mentioned in the endtimes may suggest that after the Church is removed in the Rapture, the U.S. will be destroyed in the tribulation by natural disaster and nuclear war as it is also prophesied that a 1/3 of the world will die this way.

both the Roman Empire and the United States were/are lone super powers in the world, the wealthiest civilizations in the world, practiced a kind of republic/democratic government. Although after Julius Caesar the Roman Republic was forever changed to the Roman Empire.

Because it is a legitimate analogy, and because those who choose to ignore history are condemned to repeat it.

Over-extended military
severe economic strains
self indulgence & general societal decline

Corrupt Gov't

There are dire financial problems facing the US in the not too distant future. Congress has no will to address these issues. If not addressed, an economic cataclysm is coming that will make the Great Depression seem like an afternoon tea party.

Wake up and start writing your elected officials that you want the national debt and looming gigantic social service obligations dealt with NOW or we will go down, just as Rome went down.

There is in that ALL big dynasties and empires eventually fall. By all reckoning, Rome lasted about l000 years. The US had gone on for a little over 200 and will certainly not last as long as Rome did. Things go too fast these days.

Because they're stupid, and hate USA. In their minds there is no account for all the good America has done for the whole world. Most countries owe America billions of dollars, but America has forgiven those debts. Americans are notorious for humanitarianism around the world. If I mentioned all the countries America has helped, I'd be typing for two years at least. It seems to me folks who compare us to the Roman Empire, only think about the power they wielded, as USA does, and forget the gifts USA has given. It's easier to do that when you hate a country who is more giving, and loving than your own, and if you are a Liberal who only cares about their party controlling a GREAT Nation, like USA, even if they bring her down to do it.

Both powerful militaries, strong government, exerting their influence in other parts of the world. In many cases welcomed influence, but in some cases not.

I suspect those who are comparing are hoping that what happened to the Roman empire will happen to the United States.

Or they make the comparison to warn us about what might happen if we continue on the path we're on.

Some of our founding fathers advocated a revolution every 20 years or so to prevent our government from getting too powerful. I can't argue with that.

I agree. The Romans did not have the capability to destroy the world. That coupled with the fact that the U.S. fights it's own wars and the Romans paid others to do so defeats the argument.

At one point in time, Rome was the superpower. You can compare them in those terms. Both are countries and they had similar governments.
