i always hear about the surge ending in april.. what is that? what does that mean? soldiers are now up to 15 month deployment is it possible for them to be coming home sooner.. or worse stay longer? many of the pres. candidates for next year say they want to pull out. but it kind of makes sense that if they pull out too quick, there can be problems. where is this going?!

This is really a tough question to answer. One of the biggest problems with understanding the Iraqi situation is that people like to disseminate erroneous or simply false information. for example, one of the answerer's here mentioned blood for Iraqi oil. the problem with this little bit of nonsense is that the USA never has gotten Any oil from Iraq. the biggest consumers of that product would be European nations, which is why we were getting flack from them over the war!!
Now, about the surge. This is a specific military operation that we are now engaged in. It basically involves a large influx of American troops who are following a method of front line engagement with opposition forces. Unfortunately, this means bringing the war into homes and neighborhoods, a strategy which we tried to shy away from at the beginning of the war, but now realize it is the only way to go. After the "surge", it is obvious that we will need a strong force to maintain what we have accomplished. the goal is to eventually have the Iraqi's handle that themselves, but they are no way near capable and won't be for some time. this is what makes any "quick pull out" impossible.

The Insergents are being killed or have stopped. The death toll per thousand is still less than many countries including the U.S., Germany and France, has better employment than a half dozen countries and less negative immigration than over a dozen countries.

The deployment won't end in Iraq when they leave. The number of troops will increase in Afganistan.

My answer is. Leave some of the troops there in case rebels try somthing stupid. The reason I say leave a few is because remember what the Ancient Romans did. They moved basically their whole military into different part of the world, and what happened??? Barbarians took over Rome.

It will be a gradual pull down of troops it takes a while to get all that equipment out. But the main thing is the Iraqi's must step up and defend theirselves.

It's going where it has been since the beginning...to hell.
Yes, there will be carnage when we pull out, but the people of Iraq must settle their internal differences THEMSELVES!
