When ever he gets excited, he starts breathing really heavily and makes snorting noises for about 30 seconds ... he's been doing it for as long as I can remember, but I'm worried it could be a sign of something.
He's a 2 year old toy poodle, if that helps.

My sister has a toy poodle (he is 1 1/2). It is totally normal for him to start breathing hard especially when they haven't seen you for awhile. Like when you go shopping or something and you come back home they get hyper excited and start jumping on you and breathing hard. The snorting noises are funny : ) but yah that's all it is. It is a sign he is totally excited to see you. Did you know poodles are like the smartest dogs with the most emotions? You can absolutely tell when they are excited, sad, angry, annoyed, and other stuff.

sounds like anxiety, i had a crazy anxous dog once she was sweet but sooo hyper wouldnt even settle down to eat we had to watch her eat. she never hyperventalated but she was a springer spaniel so a bit bigger than a poodle, i could see a poodle hyperventalating. younger dogs like playin more and are more hyper, he may settle down with time, consult trainers and doctors for more tips on getting him to settle down. and to check if theres a medical thing to this.

the fact that It is a poodle makes it more common, but i dont think thats normal. My advice, take it to a vet. if not, get a labrador retriever. they are uch more fun!

When any dog gets exited by interesting smell, they snort.
If there is no shortness of breath involved,,,, just relax.
All the best.

Could be a sign of heartworms. Might wanna have him checked if he is not on a preventative.
