Catholics are often derided for our devotion to the saints. But have any of you ever read their writings? Here are a few quotes:
"Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee" - St Augustine
"Lord, shine your glorious light into the darkness of my heart" - St. Thomas
"May the all-powerful Lord grant us a restful night and a peaceful death" - Blessed Miguel Pro, S.J.
"O Lord, make me an instrument of thy will" - St. Francis of Assisi
"All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle." - St. Francis of Assisi
"Truth suffers, but never dies." - St. Teresa of Avila
"The entire world in fact cannot enjoy true peace if it is not of one fold and one shepherd. " - Blessed Pius IX
"Tribulation is a gift from God - one that he especially gives His special friends." - St. Thomas More
"To receive the grace of God you must go to the desert and stay awhile." - Bl. Charles de Foucauld
Not too bad. Worthy of respect, even. Comments anyone?

I only know St. Francis of Assisi and St. Teresa of Avila. The first time said them was on World Youth of 1992 in Spain. Juan Paul II. We visit the place where St. Teresa of Avila devoted her holy life to Jesus Christ. I was so inspiring how great his love is. How much she love God, and how beautiful is to love Christ God. I enjoy saying those pray with the saint to our God.

"All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle." - St. Francis of Assisi
I am reminded of these words everytime I come into the Religion & Sprituality forum. Sometimes there's only one lone soul proclaiming the truth amidst the sound and fury of godlessness, and yet that one lone voices soars above them all because Truth cannot die, and the human heart thirsts after it. When the heart hears Truth, it recognizes it as so.
DON'T LISTEN - to answer your question: As to a biblical source for the canonization process, it flows from the divine authority given to the Church by Christ through St. Peter and his successors the Popes. In Scripture Christ promised that the Holy Spirit would guide the Church and preserve her from error, and that Peter and his successors would have the power to "bind and loose" which includes the power to declare the sainthood of certain individuals who have shown "heroic virtue" or performed great miracles by the power of God. The Bible says "you will know them by their fruits" and the Church is merely officially declaring this to be so.

Hey, those are cool quotes.
I'm a saint also, according to Scriptures. Maybe the catholic church doesn't recognize it, but the Bible says I am, because I love God, and belong to Jesus.
By the way, an excellent book I strongly recommend, written by a catholic monk in French, but since translated to English is called "The Practice of the Presence of God." It's small but powerful. I can't remember the name of the man who wrote it, but please read it. You'll thoroughly enjoy it, and perhaps draw closer to God because of it.

Yes, my comment is one the Protestants rarely, if ever, take into consideration and that is the "Scripture" "You will know them by their fruits"---the Saints are the fruits of the Catholic Church and no other----The Catholic Church is the Bride of Christ.

Can you point me to the biblical source where the canonization of saints is discussed? I'm curious. I'm a protestant, and it seems to me that all of these saints would only hinder one's attempt at a relationship with his/her savior.
I mean no disrespect. I'm curious about the Catholic religion.

These were, for the most part, undeniably special people. My difficulty, living in Italy, isn't your devotion to a saint,it is your adoration of a plastic statue.Pray to your favourites saints, not to their images.
