My cockatiels claw appears to have broken somehow, above the point where you would clip (I don't clip his claws). It happened when I was at work so it's not bleeding now, but it appears to have bled quite a bit, and now he won't put all of his weight on it and seems a little shaken up. Is there anything I can do for him now? Apart from clean him up? I may go to the vet in the morning if he's still not good, but its too late now.

He hasn't broken his leg, or even his foot, its a claw, same as breaking a fingernail too far down on a human, and nothing like a dog breaking its leg. Stop with the silly answers and can someone with knowledge of birds please answer.

Cockatiel claws are very flexible, but it is still possible for them to break it if they get it caught in a toy or anything with a small hole that can catch it. At this point there is little you or the vet can do. If it is not bleeding, then I would just keep an eye on it and it should heal on its own. This is NOT like a dog or cat breaking a leg. A claw can not be set like a broken leg can. Make sure you have some septic powder on hand, which any pet store should have. This way, if it bleeds you can put this powder on the part that is bleeding and hold it for a few seconds, and the bleeding should stop. Bleeding is the biggest concern. If there is a visible wound, take it to the vet and get an antibiotic to give your bird to fight possible infection. If there is no visible wound or bleeding, just let it be. It will heal on its own. I am glad to help further, if you have more problems. IM me if it gets worse, even if it shows me offline. I will get the message as soon as I get back, and will get to you ASAP.

get some neosporin and put it on the end where he broke it. As long as it stopped he will be ok. You need to look in the cage to see if there is a spot he can get caught on or a toy like metal chain he can get caught in. I had a parrotlet lose a toe nail due to getting it caught in a metal chain so no more toys with metal. I use plastic now. If he was stuck he may have strained the leg muscles a bit and that will take a day or 2 to get better. A vet visit would be good just to make sure he doesn't get an infection. Good luck.

Ed seems to have the right idea.
I would try to make your Cockateil as comfortable as possible, and give him some of his favorite treats to try to cheer him up. You might try some nice cooked veggies if he likes those, since warm( not hot) food can calm a stressed bird sometimes.
If you don't have styptic powder, try using corn starch or flour if it starts to bleed again. Just cover the whole foot and let it absorb the blood. If he starts to bleed again you might want to take him to the vet ASAP, since you say he already lost a lot of blood. The little guys don't have a lot of blood to begin with!
Farm stores commonly sell antibiotic powder for birds. Try calling the local farm stores and ask if they have Tetracycline and Sulfa. This combination powder is great for most infections, and is easy to administer by simply mixing 1 teaspoon of powder into a gallon of drinking water. It normally costs less than $20 for a packet of 50 teaspoons.

Good luck.

Call an avian doctor first before you do anything else. Get some advice. Cockatiels usually try to heal themselves. I have 6 of my own and everytime Something happens I call so they could give me advice through the phone first. Before I take them in. Take care and goodluck

Clean it up. Take him to a vet. It's the best way if you don't want infections.

Go to the vet. If your dog broke his leg, you'd take him, wouldn't you?
