I have called the municipality twice and they didn't come to collect it. Furthermore I was told the cost of getting rid of it would be my responsibility. What do I do? It's been there since last night and beginning to smell bad.

You can call them again, or file a complaint that they aren't doing their job. You could pick it up, but I'm not sure where you would dispose of it. Keep calling, or go to a local vet center, and see if they can dispose of the cat.

Assuming you're not a child, go get a shovel and bury him at least a foot down below the surface of the lawn.

You can also wrap him in plastic and place the body in your garbage container, but that would make things smell pretty bad till your bin is picked up to be emptied.

Animal control deals with numerous things, and dead animal pickup is low on their list of priorities, there is too much else they need to have done to get to small animal carcasses around the city. If you don't know who the owner was, it's your responsibility to properly dispose of the body. Burying it is the most sanitary way.

Oh Celeste, you poor thing; I know exactly what you mean about the stinch. We had a skunk to pass at our house so we had extreme odor problems going on. My husband poured lime on it. We have a huge pond in our front yard and it was leaking and he had purchased the powered lime to seal the pond. Then the little skunk passed on and we had to get rid of the smell before we could even begin to approach it to bury it. So he took his dozer and scooped up some lime and put it on it and covered the skunk until it stops the stinch and then we buried it a couple of days later. Good luck to you!!

I would bury it. We have many squirrels and other critters around our property and we just bury anything dead in the compost pile. However this won't work if you have dogs, they will dig it up. I don't know what your garbage ordinance says, but you might also be able to wrap it really well in plastic bags and put it into your own garbage.
