Go to maltese rescue. I know they have dogs because when I got two malese in sheltie rescue, they were too full to take them right away. Google maltese rescue and your state. You'll find them.

Try petfinder.com. I don't know where you live but right now there are tons of small dogs on there. Otherwise you need to check into breeders or on craigslist, but either way you want to make sure they have done genetic testing and you will want to see the adults and make sure that the female is between 2-5 years of age. If its younger or older don't buy, also if the female has had more than 3 litters, only one a year!!! Don't buy. You will want to check to adults for any skin, ear, eye, etc. problems. If the parent has these problems then most likely the babies will too. They should be current on shots and have no fleas or worms. To get a Maltese in great condition you will probably be spending at least $1000. Just be aware that if you get a dog from someone that cannot show you these things, you will most likely end up with a dog with problems and end up spending 3 times that to fix these problems. Good luck to you and I hope you find the puppy you are looking for.

try searching out online rescue sites for maltese sometimes you'll luck up and find one. If not then you may have to break down and pay a price that you don't want to if you're wanting this puppy bad enough. You could also just find a different breed. Sometimes things turn out for the better that way. Then when the time is right you have the money saved up or find one at a shelter you could get a maltese then. Hope this helps!

What is a reasonable price?
If you want a good maltese......you have to shell out your bucks.
IMHO, there should be 100% tax on any puppie sold, so people think twice.

Shelters aren't the only place with dogs for adoption - there are numerous rescue groups around the country.
