to his daughter?:
(As a child): "You've been trouble since you were born. We should never have had you.")
(As an adult after an argument): "I feel sorry for whoever ends up with you.")

Would it be normal for something like that to lower your self esteem?

That hurts my heart! No one should say that about their enemy, let alone their daughter. Granted, children can be difficult at times, but that is no excuse for such rude and insulting talk. A parent should be more mature than that but unfortunately some people never do. That is the parent's fault, not the child's.

Yes, I think it would be completely normal for the daughter to to get a lower self esteem when she hears such things. I wish I could befriend the daughter and remind her what God thinks of her. Namely, that He knit you perfectly in your mother's womb. You are precious in His sight. He gave His Son for you so that you can have a relationship with Him. (That's a special love!) He longs for you to talk with Him and desires very much for you to find your self worth in Him. When your earthly father puts you down, look to your Heavenly Father to build you up. He knows you are hurting and wants to love and carry you through this difficult time. The Bible says, "Cast your burdens on Him for He cares for you."

That absolutely is NOT something a father should say to his daughter. My heart aches for you if this question is asked because the father is your father and I hope that there are other people in your life who are positive towards you. Words like that would certainly lower a persons self-esteem. And if you have low self-esteem, please try and put what your father has said to you aside. Look for the positives in yourself and look for positive people to surround yourself with.

A father would say things like that because he is deeply hurt himself and doesn't know how to more past that hurt.

Those things can only lower your self esteem if you give them credence.

That is verbal abuse. He says it to lower your self esteem. Don't let that work on you. It is designed to lower your self esteem, but be strong, see through it and don't buy into it!

Good gracious. Those are things that a good father would never tell his child. That's sad. He sounds like a sour, negative guy himself. The kid is the one that needs to be sorry to have ended up with a father like that. wow!

its verbal and emotional abuse. A child should never have to hear such negativity from a parent ~~ my 8 year old was told she was being an "asshole" by her father. Children can be hurt by such actions and tone. I recommend you document this incident for future references and yes seek out a counselor to talk to or another trusted adult. BEst of luck to you.

That's to bad. Yes it would lower your self esteem.
I'm so sorry he says that.
Assume he is under tons of stress and I'm very sure he doesn't mean it.
Chin up.

It isn't normal. It isn't right.

People often exercise their power by trying to bring people down. It makes them feel strong and in control. It a way to control people. That doesn't mean they are correct in what they say.
