Gluttony and Greed.

Toss those and the world will be a much nicer place.

If the US can stop consuming 70% or more of the world's resources...the rest of the world will be much happier too!

I think the answer is in the question.
What we all need to get rid of is 'excess' of any kind.
We in the western world are already in such a privileged position by simply having food, shelter, a good standard of living etc. Anything above & beyond that is simply 'excess' that we dont need. We dont need more clothes, jewelery, cars, food, material possesions etc. My stomach turns when I see these millionaires flashing their wealth in the papers & magazines, whilst at the other side of the world people die because they dont have food or clean water.
Its a mad world.

The desires ( Kamanaa ). That is the mother of all the evils.

I will tell you how:

When you have desires there are two possibilities- 1. Either they are fulfilled or 2. They are not fulfilled.

When they are fulfilled to any proportion, they will give rise to demanding more and more and that will develop greed in us. Proportionately we will feel proud and that will raise the ego in us.

When the desires are not fulfilled or met to a lesser expectation, we feel angry and in extreme cases enraged. We then lose control over our heads and commit grave sins.

So the root cause of all our evils is ever flourishing desire of the worldly (Mayik) possessions.

If we can tame our desires to the bare minimum needs for our survival and without attachments (love or hate), we will be free of our excesses.
