You get paid on the first working bank day of each month. In September that pay day will fall on September 4th, because Monday is Labor Day. The system was changed from the last day of the month to the first working bank day of the month many years ago to allow the Federal Treasury to gain more interest on deposits of the money in their accounts.

You will get paid on the first banking day after the first.

Example, Since Sep.1 is Saturday, and Monday is Labor Day holiday, I will have to wait until Tuesday the 4th to get my retirement pay.

My retired pay is automatically deposited. I usually get it in my account one or two days before the 1st of the month.
VA disability check is almost always two days before the 1st.
It will depend on your particular bank how fast they credit your account after they receive the money, which is usually two working days before the 1st.
This week I got VA deposit on Thurs morning and Retirement deposit on Fri Morning.

I'm in the Army now and got paid today. I think the funds post on the day before but it largely depends on the bank as to when the funds become available.
