Try ground red pepper, straight from the supermarket. Sprinkle around the perimeter of the kitchen. You can also sprinkle around the perimeter of the house so they don't get in at all. I've also used to repel insects on my plants.

If you can find out where they are coming in, seal up those cracks with caulk. When I had a big ant problem, someone told me to wash all the surfaces down with a vinegar and water solution, because the ants don't like the vinegar. I tried it and it worked for a while. When the ants came back, I just started spraying the strays with glass cleaner. That stops them dead in their tracks, and because I use a soy-based glass cleaner (instead of the ones with the harsh chemicals) there is no smell. Good luck, I can't stand those little ghost ants!

I heard this on the radio. Mix equal parts sugar and power-based laundry detergent. Sprinkle around. Ants will eat it because of the sugar but the laundry detergent will kill them. I haven't tried to see if it works.
