The Holocaust, aside from the terrible loss of life, there are many reasons. The Holocaust left a permanent scare on the European psyche. Few Germans did anything to prevent the mass killings. Jews from all over Europe, who made great contributions to their societies died in the camps.

Worst of all, it was the first time in history that genocide was committed using such advanced technology to systematically kill millions (the gas chambers). The Holocaust illustrates how science can be used for evil purposes by evil men.

Interesting question, but moot point. What is done is done. 9/11 was a wretched act of war on innocent Americans. The Holocaust was an unspeakable act, perpetrated by a mad man, etc. Nobody can go back and undo what has been done, but we can pray that those kinds of things never happen again. We can also work hard at peaceful endeavors.

I wouldn't stop any of them.

Where would we be without the lessons learned from each of those?
1. The Crusades taught us of the perils inherent in religious persecution, and the lengths that the faithful will go to.
2. The Inquisition taught us religious tolerance (or at least should have).
3. The Holocaust showed us exactly how evil power in a single person's hands can be.
4. 9/11 taught us that even though we consider ourselves to be safe at home, we are never secure from religious fundamentalists.

Im not God, I dont know the path we are on. I trust my GOd and God knows, Playing God is not good for me or anyone else I have known. The world is exactly to me as God wants it. I can only do the next right thing and Pray for Gods will to match my own. Accept this world as God would have it not as I would. I cant see 3 billion 20 trillion years at once. When I can ill choose what is good and what is bad.

I'd pick any of the genocides. Hitler's, the Khmer Rouge's in Cambodia, the Turks' mass killings of Armenians, the Bosnian genocide of Serbs, the Rwandan genocides, the Sudanese genocides that are going on right now, or many of the others that didn't have the luck to get into history's spotlight.

I'd go back and talk Andrew Jackson out of sending all Indians to the reservations. The Trail of Tears wouldn't have happened and I believe the tribes could have showed us better ways to live with the land and with each other.

The Holocaust, with over six million murdered. The Crusades would be a close second.

I would stop the holocaust in world war two.

Even though 9/11 was tragic, there has been much worse atrocities throughout the world.

Great answer Dharmanator! I was thinking about the tangible tragedies but after reading his answer I have to agree. More people have been killed throughout history in the name of religion (pick any religion) then for any other reason.

I think most of this world's tragedies had/have a chance/possibility to not ever happen. There are always warning signs whether people choose to pay attention or not.
