Disobedience to God.
It was not a "sin" for Adam and Eve to eat the fruit.
What was the sin is that God told them not to and they did it anyway.

Sin is not doing what God wants or expects from us. Adam and Eve sinned because they did what God had told them not to do. We are to live by the 10 Commandments and the other Laws in the Old and New Testament. So yes Christians do know what sin is. As a Christian I try to avoid sin but I am unable to do that and I have to ask for forgiveness every day.

Sin is doing wrong. The Ten Commandments are Laws that God wrote for us to obey. Let's see the Sixth Commandment. "Thou shall not murder" Exodus 20:13: God gave us life. No one can take that away. Now, if you kill a person you are breaking that Commandment and commiting a sin. Now, if you recall the United States History, the Laws that were first made in the United States were based on the Ten Commandments to secure that all citizens abide and do not commit crime. So if you do kill someone, then you committed a crime, get arrested and go to jail to pay. So when you break a Ten Commandment you are also breaking the Laws of the land. "You shall not commit adultry" Exodus 20:14: If you commit adultry, you are in sin. Now in the laws of the land human laws, adultry is not seen as breaking the law, but in away it is because this causes divorce and break up of the family which has to be seen in court and there the judge decides who gets the children if there were any in that marriage. So in a way it is seen by the law of the land or in other words a judge.
Many think and see the Ten Commandments as silly or dumb. But they are what the laws of the land are based on. God wants all of us to behave because is we do not behave and obey we face consequences. Just as if you kill a person the consequences are you go to jail. When we obey God and His Word (the Bible), we are in obedience to Him and we are rewarded with blessing. No matter what, God loves all of us, but if you commit a sin and do not repent He feels hurt and sad. This is where you repent, ask for fogiveness and He will be happy. He loves us no matter what, but to obey is to keep our union solid with Him. You obey your mother and father then the union between them and you will be strong. No matter what they love you, but as to not get them angry or upset and sad you behave. This is where love comes in also which is a binding to keep the union strong.
If your father says do not take the car and you do take it, have an accident (I pray you never have an accident) but suppose you do have one. This is a lot of suffering that your father and mother will have to go through because of your dissobedience. So obedience is the key to avoid trouble which is DO NOT SIN.

Sin is "missing the mark". Anything that falls outside of the will of God is sin. More than a particular action, sin is a nature and a heart condition we are all born with. It is detestable to God because God is perfect. As long as we live in sin, we will be separated from God because of it. If we die in sin, we will be separated from him for eternity because of it. The wages of sin is death, but Jesus defeated both. One only needs to accept that and turn away from sin to be set free.

There are other sins other then the 10 Commandments. Moses passed along other laws to the people. These were supposed to be temporary "till the seed should come," and that seed was Christ.

anything that you put BEFORE God. To worship your children and forsake God is a sin. To overeat or smoke or do drugs is a sin because it defiles your body which is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. To lust in your mind after men or women who are not your spouse is feeding your flesh and not your spirit-ergo...a sin. To curse and gossip and put people down is a sin because it does not edify the hearer. Sin isnt just 'abortion, homosexuality and drugs'.
Anything that separates us from God in thought, in body, in spirit...is sinful. Thats why the "Im a good person" excuse doesnt fly. Its not just about not killing or stealing..its about living holy and acceptable in His eyes...
blessings~

The law is not of faith: Galatians 3:11,12
Whatever is not of faith is sin: Romans 14:23
Only the law imputes any sin: Romans 4:15; 5:13
Law imputed sin brings death: 1Cor 15:56; Jam 1:15
No law = No sin = No dead end
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Sin is breaking God's law- which is disobeying Him. When we go "against" God- we are sinning against Him. If someone lies- they have broken His law- they disobeyed the Lord. Now why do you think God has made His laws His laws? Because He knows that it only leads to unrighteousness.
Is murder wrong? Yes. I know what you are trying to get at here chip- and I already told you, disobeying God IS wrong. Do you think the murder is wrong too? Of course it is-- for US to go against God and do something that is not of HIm- that He has forbid us to do, why do you think he forbids it? Because He knows better than we do. He always knows better than we do.
So sin is disobedience to God-- how do we disobey God? By breaking His laws-- going against Him. That is why certain things are labeled a SIN in God's eyes- For the Bible even tells us these are sins! Because when we commit them, the outcome is us going against God. He tells us not to, and we do it anyway....we have sinned.
1 John 3:4
Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
