i have an old cosina 4000s slr camera what sort of battery does it take

The original mercury battery was very good at holding its voltage right to the end. Alkaline and silver replacements aren't as good, so a good idea is to devise a check on the exposure reading that you can perform before any important sessions. And carry a spare.

Originally it would have had a mercury battery, but a silver oxide battery will fit (they also last longer and do less harm to the environment) The type is SR44, which is the same as a 357 or SG13. Maplin's sell them.
