You were brought up in America where the Standard British accent holds prestige, has an image of sophistication. British haven't had waves of immigrants going to America for manual labour for a long time, so your main exposure to them comes from London intellectuals and those in the ivy league university scene, etc.

It might be because English accents make the person sound sophisticated and intelligent. You notice in movies if there's a scientist, he'll never ever have a southern Alabama accent or something like that.
