I'm occasionally tempted to get my law school's crest, until I remember just how dorky that would look.
I'm inclined to the scales of justice. If you want something a little more abstract, you can get the symbol for 'libra' which is more stylized idea of scales than the literal representation. Looking within the zodiac also is a good source for regular scale designs. Of course, as I am also a libra my comfort level with this may be different than yours.

I'm not too keen on the gavel idea. It is less representative of an 'ideal' and more just of the legal profession itself - perhaps even specifically of litigation.
In the end, I agree that getting a tattoo seems a nice way to celebrate finishing law school (hell, I've been halfway to a tatoo parlor after completing a take-home) but I am leaning towards making it the occasion, not the subject matter. I can think of many symbols that are meaningful to me outside of the law context. Working 75 hour weeks, maybe we'll want a reminder of our outside lives, not a representation of what is enslaving us! :)

I dont see a problem with tattoos. I dont like the people that have their arms and legs and every part of their body covered in tattoo, but I do have one tattoo. It's Carpe Diem (Latin for seize the day) in black ink over my belly button, so that when I'm standing in front of the mirror in the morning, I can remember to make every day the best it can be.

"Quis custodiet ipsos custodes" - Who watches the watchmen
Although, perhaps that would be more appropriate for a real journalist. I guess it depends on the kind of law you practice.

If you like foreign languages, how about the Chinese or Japanese characters for justice?

Or the image of a Roman or Greek god symbolizing a quality your hope to demonstrate?
ex) Minerva - goddess of wisdom & war, an Olympian

Lastly, if your law school has a mascot or shield you really like, you could use that for inspiration.

"Why did I waste my life?" in ambulance writing....y'know, backwards so you can read it in the mirror.
