Imagine a family member of yours gave you a check as a gift, but you lost it before you had a chance to cash it. Would you call them up and ask them to write you another check or would you just forget about it? What would you do? Why or why not?

If you do nothing, the money will not be deducted from their account -- so they could eventually find out that you did not cash it and wonder what was going on.

If you eventually find it and cash it, they might have not realized it hadn't been cashed & spent the money. This could cause them to write a bad check.

What I would do is let them know that you lost the check -- but not ask them to replace it. If you eventually find it, tell them you found it before cashing it.

My brother and his wife moved right after they got married, and they lost $500 worth of gift checks. It's been over a year and only one relative has asked about the check not clearing.

I would call the person (or e-mail if you're nervous) and say "It seems I have lost the check you sent me, so I just wanted to let you know it won't be clearing your account. I feel really badly about it, but I didn't want to mess up your bank balance." They'll probably offer to send you a new check.

I would let them know. They'll know the check never cleared their account when they balance the checkbook against the statement. I would simply apologize, let them know the check was lost, but not ask for a replacement. I'd look at it as if they had given cash and I lost that. Oh well, better be more careful next time!

It might be embarrassing, but you should admit that you lost it. If it was a fairly large amount, the giver would want to have the bank put a stop on it so no one else could cash it.

The giver should write you another check realizing that we all make mistakes and lose things. Then cash it right away and write a very nice thank you note.

I would call them up and explain that misplaced the check. You probably won't have to explain too much as they will realize it has never been cashed. You should not ask them to write you another one. They will offer to do so if they want to. If they don't offer to write another one for you, do not be upset. Keep things in a place where they won't be lost.

I would let them now so they could cancel the check in case someone else finds it and trys to cash it. Dont come right out and ask for anouther check but mabey the family member will write you anouther one anyway. Just call and say, Uncle Mike, Im sorry but you might want to call your bank and cancel the check you wrote me. Ive lost it. mbey hell say Ok ill do that and replace the check with a new one. this way your informing him but your not comming out and asking for anouther one.

You should tell them that the check is lost. They will be wondering what happened b/c their checkbook won't balance. Also, they might want to put a hold on that check so no one else tries to cash it. If they want to write you another check, that's up to them. I wouldn't ask them to write you another one though. I think just letting them know that you lost it would be enough to prompt them to give you another one. Don't lose the second one though!

Technically it would be considered rude, but it depends how close you are to the family member. If it was a parent or sibling, or another person you felt comfortable with, I think it would be fine.

Also, if it was a cash cheque, you would have to let them know so that it couldn't be cashed in if somebody got hold of it.

I would ask them for a replacement check after I told them it accidentally got lost - they would notice it was still not cashed, so I can't see where it would be a problem - stuff happens ya know!! It is no big deal to admit it!!

I would tell them. What if it got cashed and they thought it was u. In that way they could stop the check and maybe just maybe they'll be sweet enough to write u another one.
