Usually the type of load you have determines what type of hitch you need. The ball types are best for lighter loads because they fit tighter and there is less chucking and noise while towing. But the pintle hook is a much stronger and a more secure hitch for heavier loads. Then there is the 5th wheel hitch it is the best for many other types of heavier loads

Ball hitches are for smaller loads, and are very compact. They are limited to smaller loads because the bolt that holds the ball to whatever it is attached to is small. They are also often attached to a flimsy bumper or a receiver that is bolted to the frame of the vehicle with several bolts. They are also very precise, meaning there is very little play between the ball and the cup that fits over the ball. A pintle hook is more of a brute-force kind of thing, just hook the eye over the hook and away you go. Very industrial, very heavy-duty, made for massive trailers. There is a lot of play between the eye and the hook, so every time you accelerate or brake, you are going to get a clunk that rattles your teeth and feels like someone rear-ended you. They are absolutely no good for passenger vehicles. If you installed a pintle hook on a passenger vehicle and tried to tow a trailer you would be sick of the noise and impact within one mile. If you tried to tow a dump truck trailer with a ball hitch, it would snap the ball off somewhere in that same first mile.

All good answers. I would just like to add, if you tow with a ball hitch always use a minimum 1 inch shank, not all military pintle hitches are the same, pintles were rated at LESS than 2500 lbs, on most 1ton and smaller vehicles. Because they mounted them right to the bumper, and the ball hitch mounted into a pintle lock is rated at less than a standard ball in most class 3 hitches.

Depends on what you are towing and if you will be doing much backing up. Pintle hitches are for heavier loads but a real pain when backing.
