My great grandma crocheted my baby a blanket....the problem is she smokes like a chimney. I don't want to ruin it but it really needs to be washed (probably more than once).

wash it on delicate (or hand wash) and dry it flat. Most commercial yarns can actually handle machine wash ans dry, but since its from someone so special you want to 100% sure nothing happens to it.

Soak it for a few days in a sink filled with water and Woolite. While wet fold it and let it stay in the sink against the side of the empty sink as the water drains out of the blanket. Press it against the sink, but don't twist it. Then put towels in your bathtub and lay the blanket on top of the towels. When the towels have absorbed lots of the water, remove the towels and leave the blanket in the bathtub to finish drying.

Good luck with your baby.

my mother made me ALOT of blankets, sweaters, booties, etc. we used them all the time and did alot of washing. if you are wanting to keep it "special" then i would suggest a MILD detergent (dreft, woolite, etc) you can put it in a pillowcase (this will help with the stretching and pulling on it) try a gentle short cycle, you can lay flat to dry or hang dry(may stretch). if your dry has a fluff (no heat cycle )that would work too. today's yarns are made to be washed. my mother had the wrappers from the yarn and they have the washing instructions on them. and if all else fails ask gramma, she will know if she is a die hard crocheter. she might even still have some of the yarn with a wrapper to double check it.

I would wash it in warm water on the gentle cycle and then lay out flat to dry or dry outside on a line.
