to not being able to go without my reading glasses.
Why is it suddenly going from ok to worse so quickly?

All of your life, your eyes lose ability to focus up close. A child can see things inches from his face. This gradually moves further away until you can no longer read at a comfortable distance. Once you cross this threshold, you are officially "presbyopic" and require reading glasses.

You've just crossed the threshold. And, at 44 you likely resisted the reading glasses until you were already finding it difficult to read in many situations (holding restaurant menus are as far away as you could) and straining your eyes.

There's a combination of your eyes being relieved of the strain, thus relaxing some, and losing more focusing ability, even in three months. As you pass that threshold further, you'll require progressively more help with near tasks (stronger glasses). This will continue up to about age 60, at which point you'll have lost most all of your focusing ability.

As we age, our eyes lose the ability to accomodate on objects near to us. This is mainly due to a loss in the elasticity of the lens of the eye. This loss usually comes on gradually, but sometimes we do not notice it until it is acutely bothersome.

While I think your phenomenon is within the normal spectrum, I still recommend you consult an ophthalmologist or optometrist for a thorough eye exam. Don't mess around with eye problems.

That's typical. It probably happened slowly but you didn't notice until it was really a problem. I have a friend who needed reading glasses by age 28, it happens.
