My mom has been having pains in her side and lower abdomen...she hasn't been able to urinate and feels really nauseous. Could it be a kidney stone?

It could be a kidney stone, or something more serious. If she hasn't urinated in over eight hours, she needs to see a doctor. Kidney problems can be fatal rather quickly. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, the body is essentially poisoning itself.

It could be a number of things. Kidney stones are terribly painful and affect the way you walk and sit. more than likely she has a butt kicking Urinary Tract Infection, known as a UTI. If left untreated it can lead to a kidney infection and even cause damage to the kidney!
Get some treatment for it soon!
If she is having trouble urinating due to pain, then there is an over the counter pill that numbs the urinary tract and allows you to go pee, called AZO-standard. It makes your urine really orange but it will help her go. it will NOT treat the infection though, she'll need doctor prescribed antibiotics!
Hope she's better soon!

If a kidney stone is blocking the urethra that is the cause of the pain and the inability to urinate.

I would strongly suggest the emergency room.

Anytime you are unable to urinate you need to been seen by a doctor...if she can not get in today with her PCP then take her to the ER. I have had kidneystones twice and this could be the problem but she still needs to get in to see a doctor asap!

Possibly but there are other conditions which can cause water retention. Your mom needs to take a visit to the ER where they will conduct some tests, which will probably include a bladder scan.

sounds like it kinda. but you can usually pee with a stone because your body is trying to pass it. tell your mom to go to the doctor
