If you're talking about short sprints of 10 to 40 yards staying low is important. When you come out of the blocks you shouldn't raise your shoulders or head for at least the first 15 to 20 yards on short sprints.

At first, use long powerful strides in your initial drive phase to gain momentum and speed. Also, use arm swings from the shoulder with arms at 90 degrees to help gain power.

Once you have gone through the drive phase and you are coming to peak speed, your leg should shift into a turn over or "cycle" motion and your upper body should rise slightly. The cycle motion is achieved when your foot is brought from the ground over the opposite knee and then cycled downward.

It is important that your foot and ankle be flexed at all times. Running on the balls of your foot is more beneficial and realistic than on your toes or heals. To run on the balls of your foot you must flex the ankle and tighten the Tibialis anterior which is located on the front part of your shin.

One more thing, don't use wasted motion. If you fling your arms or legs, dip your head or shift your body in a jerking motion you waste strength and lose speed.

There's a lot more than this stuff but it's a place to start. I hope this helps.

one key thing to remember when running especially sprinting is to run on your toes...also the more explosive your start to more time you shave off your time.
