many countries still depend on imported corneas,,a universal plan to promote more donations and open banks in more nations lacking them>??

thanks for your info ,,its lack of corneas ,,not surgeons,,,the procedure is simple ,,we do it regularily but we face lack of a corneal bank,,,takes time to import them ,,as u know hla typing isnt important ,,unless in advanced cases with corneal neovascularization,,,

I'm registered as a donor, and carry a "pick me over for any useful bits you fancy when I'm finished with them" card.

Or more dignified words to that effect.

There's currently a debate in the UK whether to make organ doning an "opt out" rather than an "opt in" procedure.

This would give those who really objected the right not to be donors, but improve the supply of corrneas and other organs by including in those who are not worried, or approve but have not formally registered as donors.

I can tell you that in Michigan anyway there is no shortage of corneas and the Michigan Eye Bank has just the right amount.
When someone needs a corneal transplant we just schedule surgery, there is no back log or wait. We already know a perfect cornea is just waiting for a person in need!

well i'm not a surgeon...

but...

its probably a shortage of surgeons, not corneas. a person who needs keratoplasty can have pretty much any healthy cornea from a deceased person. dont have to worry about blood type b/c corneas dont have blood vessels.
