How do I create a good DVD using iDVD?

I burned some of my .avi files into a DVD using iMovie and iDVD. When I play it in my DVD player the sound is good but the image stops frequently for fractions of a second throughot the whole movie...
Any ideas of what am I doing wrong?
I have a G5 dual 2.5 with 1.5 GB Ram and an external DVD burner. Software is iLife 08.
