i actually bought some in a small pot in my local Stop & Shop supermarket. I replanted into a bigger pot and it's huge now!! I keep it outside in summer and give them leaves to play with every now and then.
funny thing, I have 4 cats: two get "high" on it, one eats it, the other ignores it!!
Its easy to grow if you have some already potted. I've never grown it from seeds. Needs lots of moisture.
Try your supermarket produce center or a local plant nursery (maybe even Walmart). Some places have kits you can buy and start from scratch (they give you starter pot and special soil). Try Ebay for seeds or kits.
Your cats will probably love it...and it won't harm them!
Have fun...

There's catnip seeds you can buy, and cat mint seeds -- that's a plant that LOOKS like catnip but is only decorative. It has blue flowers and no good catnip smell, so don't get that.
Real catnip has a very low sprouting ratio, only about one in 14 seeds will sprout for some reason, and some of the rest will come up later or next year, but not all of them will grow, so it's sort of hard to get started.
I live in Milwaukee and I find catnip growing all over the city here. If you know what it looks like, try going along the edge of some of the city parks or along open areas of railroad tracks and find it. You can dig it up and replant it by you, or pick it there and wash it off before giving it to your cat. Another good place to check is along fencing that borders large open fields. Catnip likes a lot of sunlight, but it's also one of the few things that will grow under pine trees.

Many pet and feed stores sell small pots of catnip, and so do many garden centers. Look for it among the other herbs.
It's also extremely easy to grow from seed, and you can get the seed at large garden centers.
The vet I work for has a pot of catnip on the deck behind his house, and he has to keep a heavy plastic crate over it or his cats and the others in the neighborhood will graze it right down to soil level. The stalks get nibbled off as soon as they poke up through slats in the crate.

It's mint, it's just about the easiest plant in the world to grow. We went from a patch of catnip, to almost complete groundcover in a year.
Cats are only affected by the stuff for a few minutes, then it takes a couple of hours to 'reset' so they become sensitive to it again.
Fresh is good, but I find the concentrated mist is more effective.

Petco makes these catnip bud things that come in a tube and it's really great & strong.
You have to take it off of the stem though.
Gimborn makes a catnip growing tray that's really easy all you have to do is put water in it.
It's available at drsfostersmith.com and so is Gimborn's pet grass kit- they're both the best.

Yes, it is incredibly easy to grow and keep growing. I would get some seeds. In the meantime, they sell fresh catnip in petsmart and places like that. You can try to get that to spread, but it may not based on how they package it.

Its easy to grow-if you have the time to keep it seperated from your furry friends.
In door or outdoors, if your cat's an addict little can come between them to keep them away from it.
Catnip is actually a member of the mint family. If you have the time and space, cats always appreciate their own cat kitty garden to roll, play, hide and nap in ;-)
