First off - if you are a Dr. or know a Dr. in the specialty of Gastroenterology who is on the cutting edge of new treatments - please IM golden_autumn_dancer (on yahoo network). Please read on - Every time my mom eats (even bland foods like plain boiled chicken or babyfood veggies) she gets so much acid that she thows up violently or burps so louldly it is amazing in such a petite woman. Her stomache is litterally killing her. She was thin to begin with, but this is insane!
She has had her gallbladder removed (it was found to be 100% inactive) she has had mulitple scopes (done by local gastroentrologists), eaten the radioactive stuff, has had a metal rod with a camera down her throat all night long and has had a CT scan. She was also tested for H. Pylori (negative). The findings were slow motility and a tiny Hiatle Hernia. Both of which should have been able to be effectively treated with medications. The medications do not work; she is getting sicker! She has had this for 14 years.

She currently takes 40 mg of aciphex daily (she has tried every PPI from prilosec to protonix - aciphex seems to work a little better, but she is still really sick!) She has also taken multiple rounds of Sucralfate, and she has tried Reglan. NONE of it really makes much difference! She also takes the max of pepto-bismol, tums, and No-Doz (for the motility) daily. None of it helps!

She grew up in south America, so is there such a thing as a bizzare stomache virus that could do this to her? HELP!

Does anyone know a Dr. of gastroenterology in the US who is on the cutting edge of this? If so, please IM me! Can anyone solve this unsolvable mystery?

This sounds like a VERY disturbing situation to say the least. I'm certainly sorry about this.

I agree, to some extent, your mother should be ruled-out for Celiac Disease. However, vomiting is NOT a common side effect of this disease.

Two things I would look for though:

(1) Esophageal Achalasia -- will commonly cause these presenting symptoms (vomiting, and weight loss). Treatment is rather simple, but not always effective in all cases: Nifedipine 10 mg capsule -- Bite and swallow capsule 30 minutes before meal.

(2) Zollinger-Ellison syndrome - a tumor of the duodenum that can cause excessive gastric acid production. You can get a "Gastrin Level" from the blood to detect this, and may be able to see it on an ultrasound as well.

Has your mother had a CT scan of her abdomen for this issue? I'm sure she probably has, but I just wanted to ask.

I would, however, suggest a few simple things to try as well:

STOP all Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Pepto Bismol, etc. The medications will help neutralize the acidity, but the stomach will only respond with and increase in acid production to return to its regular pH level.

ADD an H2 antagonist like Zantac 75 mg. -- take 2 tablets each day.

ADD an H1 antagonist like Clariting 10 mg. -- one tablet daily.

EATING:
Bland diet is excellent, yes. Make sure she's eating small bites, well chewed, and swallowed SLOWLY! Small sips of water between every 2-3 bits help it to pass more effectively. Supplements like Ensure or Boost can help her get more of the calories she needs.

AVOID: Caffeine, NSAIDs (aspirin, Aleve, Advil) -- Tylenol is okay, Alcohol, or other irritants.

Have they done a pH probe level in her stomach? Sometimes that's helpful. If all else fails, she might need a vagotomy and pyloroplasty which is a surgical procedure.

I wish you both the best. Please feel free to ask me anything more if needed.

Toxins in her system that continue is what the problem is! She needs to get with her primary physician and be completely honest about all questions. Am sure he or she can help her with a complete history of her environment and what she eats or drinks. All of her habits. Dr's inquire. It is up to the patient to meet them all the way. Then she has hope of finding the cause and hopefully healing. Good luck.

Totally a long shot but have they ruled out celiac sprue? My grandmother nearly died from undiagnosed celiac disease but this was in the early 80s when not as much was known about it. Google celiac disease or celiac sprue. It's an allergy to dietary gluten, it's not infectious.
Good Luck
