I have the More from Magnolia Bakery recipe book and want to make the banana pudding. One of the ingredients is Nabisco Nilla Wafers and it says no substitutions, but they're not readily available in the UK. Does anyone know what I can use as a good substituation for them, or if there is anywhere that sells them in London (I've found them at an American sweets online shop but it would cost £10 for them with shipping!). Thanks!

I'm not sure that we have ladyfingers here (not quite sure what they are!) and I haven't heard of Lorna Doone.

It looks like the best bet is to use digestives (they're like graham crackers) or a vanilla or sugar cookie? Does anyone have any brand recommendations for the vanilla or sugar cookies?

I have just done a search on Nilla Wafers, graham Crackers, Lorna doones and lady finger biscuits as I have never heard of any of them here in the UK. Looking at the recipe it looks as though you need to use sponge fingers.

i agree with other posters that ladyfinger cookies would be the best substitute. Nilla Wafers are very airy in texture and porous enough to soak up some of the pudding - which is an important part of this traditional US recipe. the lorna doones are going to be too "crisp" and hard, and you won't get the same mouth feel. if you can find ladyfinger cookies (bisquits) that have vanilla flavor added, that should work. alternatively, buy plain ladyfingers, set out on a cookie sheet & drizzle lightly with vanilla extract or ammaretto (vanilla liquor) before using them.

My mother always makes the banana pudding and it's the best. I don't think she ever used anything besides the nilla wafers, but since they're not available to you, maybe you could buy the vanilla sandwich cookies and take them apart and use them or you could probably even leave them together for a spiced up banana pudding. Also, it would be extra work on you, but maybe you can find a recipe for the nilla wafers and make them yourself. Well, good luck with your banana pudding! =)

Ladyfingers, are these available? Mexico has a sweet called Marianna's that would work.

I should think any sweet vanilla flavored "cookie"/biscuit would do.

Believe me I would not order Nilla Wafers for that price ... You would be so disappointed.

lady fingers are lighter and spongier than vanilla wafers. Vanilla wafers are more similar to shortbread cookies, but not as heavy and dissolve more readily. That is to say, the wafer is in between the two. I would prefer shortbread cookies as a substitute for vanilla wafers.

nilla wafers are generally the same as baked american animal crackers, or lorna doones might work, I think those are English. If you have the Goya brand over there you can use Maria cookies which are pretty much the same.

You might want to try graham crackers if you can get those there. I LOVE the banana pudding with the vanilla wafers and bananas in vanilla pudding! OHHHH YUM! But I have also used graham crackers when I didnt have the van. wafers here at home and they actually worked really well
