Most people I have encountered, who took drugs, and ended up abusing them, were in a great deal of pain...wanted to fit in at first, but then found it to be a false sense of Euphoria...and when you have nothing, and think you ARE nothing, sometimes, you get hooked and even becoming a 'druggie'..is someone.....most take them to the extreme, to hide their pain...many men, get them to take and women also, for better sex, or so they think...I know that people take them, to hide the deal of emotional pain that they suffer from..and they believe that the drugs make things better, but when they become addicted, and the drugs become their lives..that's it...

I don't agree with 'shabz7297'- "because they stupid"- as his premises seem to be heavily influenced by what is, and still is, taught in schools, presented on the news and shown in other various forms of media.
Firstly, you have to be more specific; what people. Name some kind of demographic, a microcosm, something, because you can't simply label every human who chooses to take drugs as bad, or in shab's case, 'weak minded'. You first have to consider the individual who is taking the drugs, why they are and what they are achieving from their experiences.
Two notable individuals:
-Aldous Huxley
-Hunter. S Thompson
Secondly, drugs aren't for everyone. You should consider that, various forms of enlightenment can be achieved through taking illicit substances, though not every person will be able to experience this; Most will never be on the same level as Huxley. (see:Eugenics)
The advocation of drugs purely for monetary profit is what makes drugs a bad thing; they DO prey on the weak, in the hope that they get hooked, and if they do, it effectively ruins lives.
No one should ever be pressured into doing something they don't want to (drugs); nor should anyone take anything if they aren't first feeling good and contented.
But, uhh, yeah, the majority of the time, drugs are bad in terms of the 'people'.

I can answer this as a former addict...
The simple reason: It feels good.
Getting high lets you escape (temporarily) the life you have to live. Once you get a taste of how good you can feel, you keep pushing yourself to acheive that high....ending up addicted.
The reason people *start* using drugs varies. Peer pressure, the thrill of experiementation, curiosity, etc. Personally, I started using drugs because I thought that was the only way I could see the world for what it truly was...with a mind high as a kite. (Sounds silly, but it is true.)
To help addicts...the first thing we need to do is to understand this is most often a disease. They need treatment and support....that's how I got clean.

These are people who just are too weak, want to be Cool, with the wrong people, they are followers, never leaders, they don't care about the family, so whatever with Mom & Dad, aahh!, but when they need a place to sleep or money , then these loosers remember they have a family.
They use drugs, to me just to be cool, to show they follow and they are part of the group, otherwise, what would their friends say? oh,my God!. They are tough when they are with the group.
In many other cases, the family is the pusher....Dad is a looser, no example or education received here, the mother is there just to clean, serve and cook, no education or example here either.etc.etc. So, education is very important, to carry responsability is important, to talk within the family, live like a family.
If the family has no education but have kids and live in the Getto, what are the statistics on getting a professional from here? 2 in 1.000?
As you say, very true, these people are so brainless, that they are happy to get a temporary "trip", and when they are back, they are worse. They will steal from anybody to get money for another trip.
Honestly I don't believe in rehabilitation, they're still loosers, and sooner or later they will go back to it. It's very hard to trust these people....I don't.
I believe in prevention....my kids just to think about the consequence of doing something stupid like this, they prefer to die, before facing me for this issue. I talked to them a lot when kids, I told them the thruth of this stuff, and I asked them to think about how the family would feel to know that my kids did that. I Thank God, for this, but I was very open on this issue. It killed them to imagine that they would be "followers".

i used to do drugs all the time. we're talking shrooms, acid, x, adderall, and pot. i mean, like, i did adderall so i could get through school... and i smoked pot to come off of the speed, and i did shrooms or acid or x on the weekends to escape. i did this for five years. i found i could funtion and be stoned all the time. i got excellent grades in high school and graduated in the top 10% of my class. i worked at an animal clinic all through high school... but i was on drugs constantly. i can't remember hardly anything from high school... at all... now i've been sober now a year and a half. and it's been the best year and a half of my life. i started to do drugs because i thought it would make me feel better about myself... i suffer from extremely low self-esteem. but it never did. i got attention for it, but in the end i always got the shorter end of the stick. the problem now is that i turned my little sisters on to drugs at a young age now they do them all the time and think i'm insane for stopping. addiction is terrible. before i decided to quit i was in college, on a full ride scholarship and in two months everything i had, my scholarship, all my money, my job, my boyfriend, my best friend.. everything was gone... i was practically dead. i couldn't handle the pressure anymore. and i stopped caring.. that'[s the biggest problem. the day you say i don't give a damn.. watch out!! since then i've gotten a lot better, but drugs aren't the answer.. trust me.. i still crave them real bad, esp at night. i have dreams about being high all the time... it's just something that's better not to get into.

Sometimes those people who use drugs have been through really traumatic things in their lives and the drugs gives them a break from being in survival mode. When someone self medicates they dont care about what its doing to their body all they know is that they arent feeling like crap in that given moment or even if they are it isnt the same crap as when they are sober. In dealing with addicts 12 step programs can help and learning coping skills and using their resources. I am a member of AA and it really helps to be around people who understand what its like to stuggle with certain things. Also I have a counselor who is very understanding and who really has helped me in my recovery when I didnt know what to do next.

i know acouple of people who use drugs but bad drugs like herion or cocaine, lets just say i know people who use marijuana and they use to calm there nevers after along day of work, then my other frind uses it to gain weight, there are many reason why people get sucked into drugs. marijuana isn't as bad like doing cocaine or heroin. so it all depends on the person, i don't recommend using drugs.i can honestly say i had tried marijuana but it just wasn't for me. i can say that i didn't get addicted. there are studies though that people use marijuana for relaxing for studing, so am not sure what kind of answer u were looking=. here are a few reason why people use drugs. oh yeah cuz they have problems at home and they think drugs are the easy way out when they really ain't.

You know, some people just have a lot of stress and adversity in their lives that they can't or don't want to cope with, and they use drugs as an escape. They probably can't see the big picture. For others, they might have a hard time loosening up in social situations, and drugs like alcohol and pot relax them and make them more sociable. That's why I think people use drugs.

people use drugs for various reasons, most of which are based on the way drugs make you feel. all drugs have different effects and don't always work similarly on people. for the most part i think all drugs are not a good idea and i can say that because i've tried a lot of them. i can also say the reason i tried most of them was because someone i knew had them and offered to share and i accepted. i think people try drugs just to see what the allure is, or what the experience is like, kind of like people that want to try bungee jumping or sky diving. those are life threatening as well, but people take the chance anyways. i personally could never do either becaues i'm scared to death of heights. but anyways....
I smoke pot on occasion, and i'll tell you why: i have a hard time getting a good night's sleep. it helps me relax after a long day at the office and makes me go to bed early so i can get up at 5am. i also have a lot of stomach problems and smoking weed helps take away the pain and discomfort. i had a friend who died a few years ago from bone cancer and while he was in the hospital, his sister brought him some pot brownies. he said the pot brownies helped him cope better with the pain he was suffering from better than his morphine drip and also helped with the nausea he had from chemo therapy.
most people know the risks associated with using drugs both physically, socially, and legally. so if they choose to do them, then that's up to them because they'll have to face any rammifications. what worries me really are the prescription medications that people take that keep getting recalled and causing heart and mental problems. i guy i knew just died recently because he was taking a prescription medication to quit smoking and it made him have a psychotic episode. about 10 years ago they figured out that a medicine called acutane which was used to treat acne was causing kids to kill themselves. so you see, just becuase the fda approves something doesn't make it any safer than something you can buy in a dark alley. also, alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco are drugs too so if you've ever drank a soda or a cup of coffee, you've done drugs.
a lot of people are answering saying that people who do drugs have no lives or are stupid, come from a broken home, etc...well, in highschool i got all As, I came from a typical suburban family with parents still married, i've had a job since i was 16, never suffered from depression. i graduated from college with honors and a perfect GPA. i have a fulltime job that pays well, a house, and a husband that adores me. i've never been addicted to anything in my life except for maybe pizza and pepsi. i'm a perfectly functioning member of society, so stereotyping people that have tried drugs or use drugs paints an ugly picture. durg users come from every ethnicity, gender, and socio-economic class. being depressed and poor are not prerequisites for drug use. and not everyone that does drugs wants to "escape reality" that just stupid. a lot of people do them to enhance their reality, not run from it.

Responding to Korin, people smoke cigarettes because it's pleasant. That having been said, people don't "think" (as in rationalize) when they start taking drugs. They "act". A lot of things in life happen that way even though we love to see ourselves as so superior and so rational. My life experience tells me that most people are a bit crazy when you get to know them and not plain rational in their attitudes towards no matter what, including other people. Why should it be different with drugs if trying them seem like an "adventure"?
