A diode allows current to flow in only one direction. This is useful because it can be used to convert alternating current into direct current. Alternating current constantly reverses direction, so it can't be used to power devices designed to operate on direct current. The alternator in your car produces alternating current. After the current passes through the diode, it can't reverse direction any more, so you have a constant, efficient source of direct current to recharge your battery, and run your headlights, radio, dash lights, etc. I'm sure this is oversimplified, since I'm a car guy, not an engineering guy, but maybe this will help.
