Anyone know which Darwinian scholar wrote the following? An easy 10 points to the first to get it right.
“The lack of conflict between science and religion arises from a lack of overlap between their respective domains of professional expertise—science in the empirical constitution of the universe, and religion in the search for proper ethical values and the spiritual meaning of our lives. The attainment of wisdom in a full life requires extensive attention to both domains—for a great book tells us that the truth can make us free and that we will live in optimal harmony with our fellows when we learn to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly.”
Any one else agree that “The attainment of wisdom in a full life requires extensive attention to both domains.”

Correct
Stephen Jay Gould
From an article entitled “Nonoverlapping Magisteria” Natural History Magazine, March 1997
What he meant is clear and correct and speaks for itself. The realm of science (the natural world) and religion, the (spiritual) do not overlap.
When people muddy the waters either for religious or scientific reasons they close their minds to wisdom.

The problem I have is that religious cults have long ago stopped the "SEARCH for proper ethical values...", and have simply decided that THEIR cult guide book is all there is to know and anyone that questions them is wrong and/or going to a naughty, hurty place with the bad man and can't be special and happy in the invisible sky daddy's powerful magiks!

It corresponds well with Baha'u'llah's (1817-1892) allegory of the bird representing the oneness of knowledge, while one wing represents scientific investigation of physical reality and the other religion which investigates spiritual reality. For the bird to soar, both wings must be equally developed and work in conjunction. As I call myself a Baha'i, of course I agree with your end statement. It makes great sense and would get rid of so much antipathy between us.

That'd all be well and good, if that was all religion does.
But it overreaches, and attempts to sell itself as being historically accurate; and its practitioners attempt to claim that the bible predicted advanced scientific concepts, and should be the basis for our governments and laws.
And once you step into OUR arena, little man, you have to play by our rules -- that means logic instead of dogma, facts instead of faith, and having to prove things rather than accepting it based on nothing more than your say-so...

I think its a great statement.
It's only when people try to replace matters of faith with what they believe to be fact that a conflict arises.
I believe science is a gift from God.
I believe music is a gift from God.
I don't believe all science or all music is from God.
Science is a faith based religion

No....don't agree. I don't know who said it but I don't care because they are wrong.
Proper ethical values can be determined thorugh psychology and sociology. "Spirituality" is an empty concept. There is no spirit.
